ETI BioInformatics is an experienced software developer. Our team is proficient in programming languages such as C++ and Java, as well as database programming languages such as SQL and Visual Basic. We are also skilled in scripting languages for multimedia authoring software such as Lingo for Director/Shockwave and OpenScript for ToolBook.
 |
Our flagship software package is Linnaeus II, a data management tool for biodiversity data. Linnaeus II is used by systematists and biodiversity researchers to create taxonomic databases, easy-to-use identification keys and to plot distribution data and biodiversity. Most of the titles in ETI's CD-ROM and DVD-ROMs catalogue are produced using Linnaeus II. Projects created in Linnaeus II 2.6 can also easily be ported to a web interface. ETI's World Biodiversity Database contains several examples of such projects.

The Linnaeus II software has been customized for various specialist purposes. ARIES, for example, is a Linnaeus II-based decision support system which we developed for RIKILT (the Dutch Institute of Food Safety) as a knowledge base and identification tool. The ARIES system is now being used in all European Union countries to detect contaminated animal feed, in order to prevent diseases such as BSE (mad cow disease).

ETI has also developed a number of custom-built software products. Examples are Yeasts of the World (custom-built XML/C++ application), the Rhinoplasty CD-ROM and De Interactieve Weergids (both created in Click2Learn Toolbook), De Wadverkenner/Die Wattexperte and Five Kingdoms (created in Macromedia Director).
|
Examples of ETI's experience in Web-based scripting languages such as JavaScript and PHP are treated in detail under Web applications. Also see CD-ROMs & DVD-ROMs for more custom-built software titles in the ETI catalogue.
