The superfamily Chalcidoidea includes about 26,000 described taxa and is one of the largest groups in the insect order Hymenoptera. Its members have the widest host range of any parasitic insect group, with more than 500 arthropod families and 25 plant families acting as hosts. Through these interactions chalcidoids play a crucial role in the stability of most kinds of terrestrial ecosystems and as natural enemies they may be chosen in preference to the use of pesticides in pest management programmes. This authoritative CD-ROM catalogue by John Noyes of The Natural History Museum, London, provides comprehensive information on taxonomy, distribution, biology and ecology of this important group of insects. It includes 36,000 references, 95,000 host records and 115,000 distributional records as well as over 300 colour images of the adults and immature stages. The TAXA system, developed by Dicky S. Yu of Vancouver, Canada, provides the software engine to look up, search, manipulate and extract data. Biological, distributional and taxonomic information are linked to scientific names which are arranged in an hierarchical taxonomic tree, which provides the framework for listing of all or selected references (alphabetical or chronological) or scientific names (original or valid) at any taxonomic level. Indexes of taxonomic names, common names, authors, images, and references facilitate the search for information, not only for Chalcidoidea, but also for associated organisms in the animal and plant kingdom.
