![]() Bird Remains Identification System Author(s): W. Prast & J. Shamoun Platform(s): Hybrid CD ISBN: Hyb: 9075000324 The identification of bird remains, in particular of pieces of feather, is of great importance to aviation. Bird collisions are hazardous, costing millions of dollars in damage worldwide. Correct identification of the remains improves the accuracy of bird strike statistics and thus contributes to flight safety. In fields like archeology and criminology, in studies of food consumption and in the enforcement of nature protection laws, identification of bird remains is also essential. This CD-ROM holds a multimedia database with detailed information on microscopic feather structures of 200 bird species from Europe and the Middle East. Its image library contains a unique reference collection of well over 1800 images of feathers and habitus pictures. An innovative computer-guided identification system assists the user in recognizing the identification characters and in quickly identifying the taxa. The interactive geographic information system supports the use of location in selecting potential hit-species. BRIS was developed by ETI, the University of Amsterdam, and the Tel Aviv University with support from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the Israel Air Force and the SPNI. In combination with, and in addition to this CD-ROM, it is also possible to contract the European Centre for the Identification of Bird Remains (ECIBR) or the Laboratory for Feather Remains Identification for extended (confidential) identification services.
