This CD-ROM is a contribution towards offering easy and complete access to the collections of the Dutch herbaria of Leiden, Utrecht, Wageningen and Amsterdam. Combined these collections hold close to 6,000,000 specimens and therefore rate among the largest botanical collections worldwide. This CD-ROM contains data and digital images of the type specimens present in the Dutch herbaria mentioned above. The CD-ROM is the result of a two-year project funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (N.W.O.: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and carried out in collaboration with ETI, the Expert Center for Taxonomic Identification. The database on this CD-ROM holds information on about 50,000 type specimens. Updates and future contributions on CD-ROM will be published within the framework of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands which encompass the herbaria of Leiden, Utrecht and Wageningen. Besides a CD-ROM, the data and digital images are also available through Internet www.nationaalherbarium.nl. It is our hope that this and future CD-ROM’s offer a contribution to strengthen all ongoing fundamental and strategic research and related activities focussing on biodiversity and systematics.
