The importance of Marcus Elieser Bloch’s “Allgemeine Natur-geschichte der Fische”, even for modern ichthyology, can be easily demonstrated but hardly exaggerated. As Bloch’s opus is of prime importance to fish taxonomy and a must for every scientist working in this field of zoology, the present revision will enlighten fish taxonomists the world over. Bloch’s work contains extensive descriptions and illustrations of some 500 species, including 267 presented as new to science or needing new names, many of which are still valid and in general use. Moreover, he introduced 19 new generic names, many of which were accepted. Dr I. J. H. Isbrücker compared the hand-coloured plates and accompanying text with modern nomenclature and thereby resolved numerous errors and inaccuracies. His work has greatly improved the usefulness of this rare volume. Every plate is now available in digital form, with both the original and recent scientific name of the species illustrated.
