An extremely rare “Royal” publication, by F. M. Regenfuss, engraver to the king Frederic V of Denmark and Norway. A collection of shells of exquisite beauty, now on PhotoCD. In 1754 Regenfuss was invited to come to Copenhagen to become engraver to king Frederic V. Once in Denmark, he set to work immediately and in a few years produced twelve plates with figures of shells for the anticipated book. They were all hand-coloured, mostly by his wife Margaretha Helena Regenfuss. Each shell is provided with a shadow on its right side, which makes the figures stand out three-dimensionally. The illustrations are so accurate that nearly all figures are specifically recognizable. Dr. J. Knudsen translated the original French text and R. G. Moolenbeek of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam compared the hand-coloured plates and accompanying text with modern nomenclature. Every plate is now available in digital form, with both the original and recent scientific name of the species illustrated.
