Geographical information systems (GIS)

ETI BioInformatics can help you make your geographical data come to life using a geographical informational system (GIS), mapping software that can display your data on interactive maps and allow users to perform searches and comparisons.

We are also experienced in linking GIS systems to the Internet to display your geographical data online.

ETI is currently participating in two GIS projects funded by NWO, the Dutch national science foundation:

For these projects, ETI is building databases, programming queries and preparing maps and map layers.

MapIt

MapIt™ is part of ETI's Linnaeus II software package. It's a geographical information system aimed at displaying species distribution data. Users can search for species in a selected area and compare the distribution of one species to the distribution of another species. MapIt also displays a map of the total biodiversity for an area.

The mapping software has been included on a number of our CD-ROM / DVD-ROM releases, like the Interactive Flora of the British Isles and Turtles of the World, to display, search, and compare distribution data.

In addition to distribution data, MapIt can be used to display many different types of geographical data. For a demonstration of the mapping software, try the Linnaeus II demo which you can download from this site.

MapIt data can also be displayed online using our Linnaeus II Web Publisher, which allows you to export your finished Linnaeus II project to the Web. An example of such an e-monograph built in Linnaeus II and published on the Web is the Euscelidia project in the World Biodiversity Database.
