Linnaeus FAQ - Linnaeus II 2.x for Macintosh

Q1: I have to include well over 2000 references in my Linnaeus II 2.0 project, but after I entered approximately 1900, the Contents function in the Literature module behaved erroneously.

Q2: When updating the Index, Linnaeus II 2.0 reports that the Index has run out of space. Is there a way to solve this?

A: Linnaeus II for Macintosh 2.5 and later fixes the problems above, plus adds new functionality such as resizable windows, full Mac OS X compatibility and much more. ETI Partners can download the latest version of Linnaeus II for free. Please visit the Linnaeus II page in Products for download information.

Q: When I try adding a picture to my project using Edit Multimedia, a) I get an error message, b) the image size is incorrect, c) the picture is garbled, or d) the picture does not show.

A: when experiencing problems as such please check the following:

a) Please verify that the picture you added is saved in PICT format if you use a version prior to Linnaeus II 2.5*. If it is used as an overview picture (Species) or as an illustrative picture in the Introduction, Text Key, or IdentifyIt, its size should be exactly 241 pixels wide by 281 pixels high.

b) If a picture appears (much) smaller or larger then it was when you saved it in your image editor, please verify you have saved with a resolution of 72 dpi (dots per inch).

c) If the picture itself is OK, please check if another (multimedia) file in the Linnaeus folder, such as a text file, does not share the same name. If so, please give the picture a unique name before adding it to your project.

d) If the picture still does not show, please verify you have specified its path name (its location within the Linnaeus II folder). To do so, choose Edit Paths from the File menu, click the Add button and select the picture. If Linnaeus II displays the message "This path is already attached to this project", please verify that the name of the subfolder containing the picture does not contain any commas.

* Linnaeus II 2.6 can handle more types of multimedia (besides PICT also JPEG and TIFF), simplifying the sharing of files between Mac and Windows versions.

Q: I have downloaded an update of Linnaeus II. How should I port my data to the new version?

A: The basic steps for importing modules of older versions and text files are explained in the manual. Below is a quick guide to importing your data from an old version of Linneaus II 2.x. There are several steps you should take:

1. Install the latest version of Linnaeus II. The new version will be installed in the folder "Applications" if you are using OS X or in "Applications (Mac OS 9)" if you are using Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.

2. Locate the folder containing the old version (originally labelled Linnaeus II 2.0 or Linnaeus II 2.1) and copy the following folders to the folder of the newly installed version:

I. Multimedia folder

II. Identify files folder

III. Open the Extras folder of the old version and copy the "Linnaus Prefs" file to the Extra folder of the new version. This saves you the hassle of reassigning the paths to any subfolders of the Multimedia folder.

3. Start the old version of Linnaeus II, open MapIt, choose Export Objects... from the Entry menu, click Export All and save the export file.

4. Now start the new version of Linnaeus II and select Import Text... from the File menu. Select the old version of the Introduction module (or any other module you have used) and in the following dialogue box click Import All. Repeat this procedure for every module you have used, except for IdentifyIt (old Identify files can be used without updating) and MapIt. To update MapIt, import the file you have saved under step 3 by selecting Import Objects... from the Entry menu. If you update the Navigator, Linnaeus will report that 0 pages have been imported, but the contents of the Welcome and Contributors fields are still updated.

5. Restore the project title using Edit Project Title... from the File menu.

You are now ready to use the latest version of Linnaeus II 2.x. One last advise is not to immediately trash the old Modules folder, but to keep it as a backup, just in case. If you have any questions, feel free to contact ETI support.
