Linnaeus FAQ - Linnaeus II 2.x for Windows

Q: Every time a window is opened or closed, I get the error message "Cannot have more than 60 menus and 255 items per menu".

A: This error occurs in Linnaeus II 2.1 if you have more than 255 fonts installed on your PC. The problem is solved by removing fonts that you don't use from your system (using the Fonts control panel).

Linnaeus II for Windows 2.5 and later fixes this problem, plus adds full Windows XP compatibility and many improvements. ETI Partners can download the latest version of Linnaeus II for free. Please visit the Linnaeus II page for download information.

Q: Can I use Linnaeus II 2.1 or 2.2 under Windows ME/XP/NT/2000?

A: At the time the Linnaeus II 2.1 CD was produced, the current Windows systems were 98 and NT. As Linnaeus does not run over a network, ETI decided to restrict the installation to Windows 95/98. We regularly receive questions as to which modern Windows flavours are supported and which are not.

The new Linnaeus II 2.5 and later natively supports Windows 98/Me/XP. The roundup for the older versions 2.1 and 2.2 is:

Windows Me: Linnaeus II 2.1 and 2.2 can be installed on and used with Windows Me without problems.

Windows NT/2000: Linnaeus II 2.1 and 2.2 perform without problems on a standalone version of Windows NT or 2000. However, when a user has limited access (typically in a network configuration), problems may occur as Linnaeus II requires privileges the user may not have.

Under Windows 2000, a user should at least have "Normal/power user" privileges with most permissions (including "Read privileges") granted. "Restricted users" and "Guests" do not have enough privileges to run Linnaeus. An easy way to tell if you are able to use Linnaeus II is when the program has an ETI icon. If Linnaeus II has a generic icon, you do not have enough privileges and the program will not start. In this case, you should contact your system administrator.

Windows XP: for Windows XP basically the same applies. Only users with administrator privileges can build a Linnaeus II 2.1 and 2.2 information system. Limited and Guest users get an error message as soon as they start the program.

Q: When I try to install Linnaeus II 2.1 on my PC running Windows NT/2000/2003, the installer states Linnaeus only runs on Windows 95 or 98. Is there a way to install it on my PC anyway?

The Linnaeus II 2.1 installer prevented the software being installed on NT/2000, as these systems were not supported. When starting a new project, the best option is to download Linnaeus II 2.6. Although ETI does not provide active support for Linnaeus II 2.6 used on network systems (the NT/2000 family), system administrators should be able to use the software without problems (see previous question).

Q: I have downloaded an update of Linnaeus II. How should I port my data to the new version?

A: The basic steps for importing modules of older versions and text files are explained in the manual. Below is a quick guide to importing your data from an old version of Linneaus II 2.x. There are several steps you should take:

1. Install the latest version of Linnaeus II. The new version will be installed at C:\Program Files\ETI\.

2. Locate the folder containing the old version (C:\Program Files\ETI\Linnaeus II 2.1 or \Linnaeus II 2.2) and copy the following folders to the folder of the newly installed version:

I. Media folder

II. Identify folder

III. Open the Extras folder of the old version and copy the "Prefs.l2x" file to the Extra folder of the new version. This saves you the hassle of reassigning the paths to any subfolders of the Media folder.

3. Start the old version of Linnaeus II, open MapIt, choose Export Objects... from the Entry menu, click Export All and save the export file.

4. Now start the new version of Linnaeus II and select Import Text... from the File menu. Select the old version of the Introduction module (or any other module you have used) and in the following dialogue box click Import All. Repeat this procedure for every module you have used, except for IdentifyIt (old Identify files can be used without updating) and MapIt. To update MapIt, import the file you have saved under step 3 by selecting Import Objects... from the Entry menu. If you update the Navigator, Linnaeus will report that 0 pages have been imported, but the contents of the Welcome and Contributors fields are still updated.

5. Restore the project title using Edit Project Title... from the File menu.

You are now ready to use the latest version of Linnaeus II 2.x. One last advise is not to immediately trash the old Modules folder, but to keep it as a backup, just in case. If you have any questions, feel free to contact ETI support.
