Windows FAQ- Windows Vista and Windows 7 compatibility

Q: Do ETI programs work on Windows Vista and Windows 7?

A: Nearly all ETI CD or DVD-ROM's will work under Windows Vista or Windows 7. The following titles that were not developed by ETI present problems and are no longer supported: Fauna Malesiana: Key to mosquito vectors Diptera Culicidae, Fauna Malesiana: Key to mosquito vectors Dacine Fruitflies, Catalogue of the Chalcidoidea of the World and Catalogue of Type Specimens in the major Dutch Herbaria.

First please verify if you have installed the latest version. ETI has issued updates for several titles that improve compatibilty with new systems. If you experience problems with sounds or movies, please verify that you have installed the version of QuickTime on the CD or DVD.

All new software must be installed and run under administrator privileges. In Windows XP it was sufficient to install the software under administrator privileges, but in Vista or Windows 7 it must also be run under these privileges. Depending on the publication date of the CD/DVD, a warning may occur from the User Account Control (UAC). No warnings will occur with ETI CD/DVD products published since June 2005.

Older CD/DVD products will give warnings when not installed and run properly. The following warnings may occur:

Find all

Problem: Installation and program work well but Find all... of the find function gives a problem.

Message: "This file is a read-only file in DOS. Save under another name". The search function gets into a loop.

Concerns: CD-ROM's from 2004 to June 2005 (except Agromyzidae of the World).

Solution

  • Click on All programs.
  • Click on the folder ETI.
  • Right-click on the title of the Linnaeus program.
  • In the new window click: "Run as administrator"

TB50 error

Problem: Installation appears fine but program will not start. TB50 error.

Message: "This network book cannot be opened, tb50RUN caused an access violation".

Concerns: CD-ROM's up to 2003.

Solution

  • Click on All programs.
  • Click on the folder ETI.
  • Right-click on the title of the Linnaeus program.
  • In the new window click: "Run as administrator"

No startup icon

Problem: After installation the program startup icon cannot be found. A few CDs contain an installation program that does not properly install the software on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Concerns: Arthropods of Economic Importance (Interactive tutorial), Flora Malesiana: Leguminosae (Mimosoideae of South-East Asia), Macrobenthos of the North Sea Vol I and Macrobenthos of the North Sea Vol II.

Solution:

  • Navigate to Program Files\ETI and then to the appropriate folder
  • Open the folder and right-click the Linnaeus application icon
  • Click "Run as administrator"
  • Double-click the Linnaeus application to start the program
  • You may manually create a shortcut of the Linnaeus application and add this to the Start menu

Explanation: Windows Vista and Windows 7 use a new security infrastructure called User Account Control (UAC). A user account may have administrator privileges assigned to it, but applications that the user runs do not also have those privileges unless they are approved beforehand or the user explicitly authorizes it to have higher privileges.

Therefore new software needs to be approved beforehand by administrator privileges and a password. If a problem occurs, this can be solved running the software as administrator. Use a right mouse-click to open a dialog window and choose to run the program as administrator.
