If you experience problems with a CD-ROM, please first check if its title is in the list below. Clicking a title will open a new page with detailed instructions on how to solve particular problems. If your problem is not listed, please refer to the section with general questions below. If your question still is not answered, please contact support.
General questions about Windows CD-ROMs
These are problems reported to ETI support that are not restricted to a single type of Windows title. Please note that questions about our Linnaeus II software are answered in a special Linnaeus II section.
NIEUW: Q: Werkt mijn CD of DVD met 64-bit versies van Windows?
A: Nee, ETI producten werken alleen met 32-bit versies van Windows. Houdt hier AUB rekening mee als u een ETI titel aanschaft.
NEW: Q: Is my CD or DVD compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows?
A: No, ETI products only run on 32-bit versions of Windows. Please take this into consideration when purchasing an ETI title.
This file is a read-only file in DOS. Save under another name" of "This network book cannot be opened, tb50RUN caused an access violation".
UPDATE: Q: Is my CD or DVD compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7?
A: The good news is that nearly all ETI CD or DVD-ROM's will work under Windows Vista and Windows 7. See this Windows Vista and Windows 7 page to solve the error message "This file is a read-only file in DOS. Save under another name" or "This network book cannot be opened, tb50RUN caused an access violation".
Q: The program (e.g. Interactive Flora of the British Isles) takes minutes instead of seconds to start. How can I reduce the startup time?
A: On startup, recent versions of Linnaeus II read a file containing the multimedia references. It appears some virus scanners (CA Associates EZ Antivirus in particular has been reported) interfere with this process. Please set the preferences of the virus scanner in such a way that Linnaeus II is considered a safe program, or contact the producer of the virus scanner.
Q: When starting the CD or DVD, I get the following error message: "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem. C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications" and the program refuses to start.
A: This particular problem has been reported by several customers who have recently updated to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Somehow, your Windows XP setup has not copied a file from the Windows CD that is required by ETI's Linnaeus II software (the latest version of which is built in Click2Learn's Toolbook). This missing file is called AUTOEXEC.NT and should have been installed in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. Microsoft has acknowlegded the problem and provides a solution on its support site.

The solution suggested by Microsoft is quite complicated. A faster option seems to be to go the folder C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR and copy the file AUTOEXEC.NT to the folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.
Q: Can I use my CD-ROM in a network?
A: Our CD and DVD-ROMs can only be used in a drive directly connected to your PC. It is not possible to use a drive that is connected to your computer through a network.
Q: My program works, but I get no pictures.
A: The pictures are loaded from the CD or DVD-ROM. This is also the case if you choose to install the program files on your hard disk, to save storage space. Please check if the disk is still present in your drive. If this is the case and you still can't get pictures, please contact ETI support.
Q: Does my program only work when I have the CD or DVD-ROM in my computer?
A: On startup, most of the recent titles will check if the CD or DVD is present and warn you if it isn't. To save space on your hard disk, our products load pictures from the CD or DVD. Therefore most of our programs only work properly with the disk present in the drive. When used without the CD or DVD inserted, all programs will give errors when a picture is clicked and some titles may not run at all.
Q: Pictures are positioned wrong and sometimes cover text.
A: This is a problem with the font settings in Windows. To solve this problem, you can try the following:
Choose My Computer -> Control Panel -> Display. Under Settings, advanced change the Font Size from Small Fonts to Large Fonts or vice versa. Restart your computer. Now change the size back to the original and restart again. If this did not work, try a Custom Font Size, restart and switch back to the original setting.
Q: I installed QuickTime, but my program keeps saying that QuickTime is not installed.
A: You may experience this problem with some of our older titles if your Windows directory is not named as "C:/Windows". To solve this problem, make a directory (folder) C:/Windows/System. Copy the files which name start with "QuickTime" in the System directory from your Windows directory to C:/Windows/System.
Certain ETI titles also require an older version of QuickTime (v2.1). If you have recently installed a new version of QuickTime and receive an error message that QuickTime is not installed, try installing the older version from the CD alongside the newer version.
Q: Can I maximize the windows in my program?
A: In CD-ROMs produced from 1999 onward (that use the Linnaeus II 2.x software), all windows can be resized. In older CDs (using Linnaeus II 1.x) you can only change the size of picture windows. Windows with a greyed maximize button can't be maximized.
Q: I get a TB50 error and when I restart the program I get the message that the program is already in use.
A: A TB50 error indicates an problem with Toolbook, the program used to develop Linnaeus II for Windows. If a reproducible TB50 error occurs, please contact support. After the program has crashed, you will have to restart your PC.
Q: When I click on the Print button in a picture, nothing happens.
A: This problem may occur in a few CD-ROM titles that use pictures in the JPEG format. Please check the list of individual titles to see if the problem has been fixed. If not, please use this workaround:
- Display the picture you want to print.
- Click the Save button (next to Print button) to save the picture.
- Open an image editor, such as the Paint program that comes with Windows.
- Open the document you just saved in the image editor.
- Using the image editor you can now print the picture.
